General Plant Care
Watering
Watering correctly is crucial for your plants’ survival. The best way to know if a plant needs water is by lifting the pot—if it feels light, it needs water; if it’s heavy, hold off. Always use warm water to avoid shocking roots and regular mist plants to maintain humidity. For plants with fuzzy leaves, like African violets, avoid misting as it may damage their foliage.
Feeding & Fertilizing
Feed your houseplants only from April to October. A water-soluble 20-20-20 or an organic equivalent works well for most tropicals. Aim to feed weekly during their active growing season to keep them thriving.
Cleaning Your Plants
Give your plants a gentle shower now and then to remove dust and discourage pests. Clean leaves promote better health and prevent spider mites. While showering, consider using a safe, organic pesticide like Safer’s Soap. Preventative treatments are effective when applied regularly with a pressure sprayer, ensuring thorough coverage on leaf undersides.
Air Movement
Fresh air and air circulation are essential for indoor plants, helping to prevent fungal diseases. Even a short period of open windows can refresh the air and benefit your plants, making your home feel better too!
Transplanting
Late spring to early summer is the best time to repot. Not all plants need repotting, and many tropicals enjoy being slightly pot-bound. When you do repot, choose a container just 2 inches wider than the current pot and ensure good drainage. Use a quality potting soil with moisture retention and porosity, and add a little root booster to help new roots establish quickly.
Choosing the Right Plant for Your Space
- Bright Light (6+ hours): African Violet, Anthurium, Orchids, Ponytail Palm, Spider Plant, Succulents, Yucca
- Moderate Light (4+ hours): Begonias, Dracaena, Peace Lily, Philodendron
- Low Light (North or East Facing): Calathea, Chinese Evergreen, Snake Plant, Pothos
Air-Purifying Plants for Healthier Air
Tropical plants also improve indoor air quality. NASA research shows that houseplants can effectively remove common indoor toxins like benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde. Adding plants like Bamboo Palm, Dracaena, Peace Lily, and Chrysanthemum helps detoxify the air and create a healthier environment.
Aim for one plant per 100 square feet of floor space for optimal air-cleaning effects.
